The Species of Diamond Valley Lake

Diamond Valley Lake is a premier destination for anglers, offering a diverse and thriving population of game fish. The lake’s unique environment supports several highly sought-after species:

Main Game Fish

• Bass: The lake is most famous for its Largemouth bass, which are known for reaching impressive double-digit weights. We also have Smallmouth bass (strictly catch-and-release) and a strong population of Striped Bass.

• Trout: The lake features Rainbow trout and a unique, highly prized bright-yellow variation known as Lightning trout. Notably, trout are the only species actively stocked in the lake.

• Catfish: Anglers can target Channel catfish, trophy Blue catfish (which can frequently exceed 50 pounds), and a small, established population of Flathead catfish.

• Panfish: Diamond Valley is home to Bluegill sunfish and Redear sunfish, both of which can reach weights nearing 3 pounds. You will also find Black crappie, White crappie, and Green sunfish.

• Other Species: The ecosystem is further rounded out by Tule perch, Inland silverside, Prickly sculpin, Threadfin shad, and Common carp.

Diamond Valley Lake in Hemet, California, is Southern California's largest man-made reservoir, holding up to 800,000 acre-feet of water across 4,500 surface acres and has over 26 miles of shoreline and is located within the Domenigoni/Diamond valleys, between the Domenigoni Mountains and Rawson Mountains, 4 miles (6.4 km) southwest of the city of Hemet.  

 

Diamond Valley Lake is a man-made off-stream reservoir located near Hemet, California, United States. It is one of the largest reservoirs in Southern California and one of the newest. It has a capacity of 800,000 acre-feet (990,000,000 m3). In terms of surface area, it is the largest lake wholly within Riverside County and the Inland Empire.

 

Diamond Valley Lake The site was chosen because of its location between the cities of San Diego and Los Angeles, and because of the raw materials located on-site for the construction of the three dams. The location was also chosen because of its proximity, about 5 miles (8.0 km), to the existing Colorado River Aqueduct that originally supplied the lake with water.
